I use this in my hockey style mask for the added protection. It gives me protection for my throat and even offers some protection for the inner part of the collar bones.

I can't recommend getting a throat guard enough. This or any other 6 inch guard is a must have for a traditional mask. Watch the video on this site demonstrating proper placement. Shortly after purchasing mine, I took 2 hits in one game right on the guard that dissipated perfectly onto my chest protector. I'm convinced it saved me from a serious injury!
